a decidedly poor second choice
To the publisher:
Am I wrong in going
back to George Perle’s “going public” with the subcommittee's
selection of Ralph Shapey back in the 80s? This was the year that a
higher-up placed Wayne Peterson as the winner. Yet all of the focus
and attention went to Ralph as the righful awardee.
As much as I supported
Ralph in this, I truly felt bad for Peterson as he was made to look
unworthy and a decidedly poor second choice. I can't say for sure either
way, as I know neither his work nor Ralph's from the selection that
year.
I can understand
George's reasoning for going to the press with his bitches. Yet, it
did smear the image of the whole prize and point further that those
who didn't win could be more worthy. It seems to have gone downhill
from then on (in my opinion).
