Announcing Our Next New Music Champion!Gala 2004 will feature new awards and celebrate with music, music, music! To our readers and new music connoisseurs everywhere:
New Music Connoisseur, the magazine that covers the contemporary scene,
is pleased to announce that its choice for New Music Champion of the 2004-05
biennial period is Ms. Frances Richard, Vice-President of Concert Music
for ASCAP. Ms. Richard was the near unanimous choice of the staff and Advisory
Board of NMC. She is the fourth such recipient since Francis Thorne, co-founder
of the American Composers Orchestra and many other organizations, was first
selected for 1998-99, followed by the team of Joel Sachs and Cheryl Seltzer
in 2000-01 and Paul Sperry in 2002-03. A special posthumous award was also bestowed
on Otto Luening in 2000. NMC is also pleased to announce that Cia Toscanini, Ms. Richards' special
assistant for many years was chosen to receive a special award as an outstanding
adjunct in the new music field. The usual biennial award to an outstanding critic/music journalist will go
this period to Ms. Shirley Fleming, music critic for the New York
Post, several other newspapers, and the magazine American Record Guide. NMC also announces its second winner in the YMCAP (Young Music Critics' Apprenticeship
Program). He is Mr. Zachary Lewis, a staff music reviewer for the Harrisburg
(PA) Patriot-News. In addition to the deserved recognition and the traditional
plaque, Mr. Lewis will receive a $250 cash award. Our first winner was Ms. Laurie
Hudicek in 2000. The presentation of these awards will take place at Gala 2004, a ceremony,
with music, marking NMC's 12th year of publishing on September 20th at New York
University's Frederick Loewe Theater, between 7:30 and 10 p.m. Attendance is mainly by invitation. If you wish to attend or make a general contribution, please refer to the list of contribution options below. Barry L. Cohen An amount
